Haha so I've been sing Castrol GTX High Mileage 5w-30, but alot of people use the Mobil 1 0w-40? I just bought a case of Castrol GTX High Mileage 10W-40. Summer is approacing in socal and today it was in the 90s so what should I and do I need to know? Thanks for the paitence.

its well known to get hotter then hell here in florida...i did an oil change and i generally use 15w-50 during the summer but 10w-40 maybe fine for some too...

M1 0w-40 is fine year round.

is the 0w-40 actually 10w-40 or actually 0w? is the 10w-40 sutable?

as far as I know the 0w-40 is the cream of the crop. I used to even dragrace with the 5w-30 but its viscosity and composition changed to something I wouldnt use in my lawn mower. The 0w-40 is a great oil so far and I swear by synthetics, havent had any oil related failures even on my first ex's truck that I drove 40 miles home with NO WATER! everything fried electrically and the exhaust was a dull purple color when cold. That was with 30k old 5w-30 years ago. Try anything stupid like that with dino oil.

M1 0W40 is a thin 40wt and actually thins to a heavy 30wt before oxidizing back to a thin 40wt.

the Castrol will have less VIIs and as a result not thin out like the M1 does.

HOWEVER...
the Castrol additive pack is said to be rather weak, so i would see about bumping it up using 8oz of GM EOS, or if you want the best option available, 12oz of SX-UP by Specialty Formulations.

I'll be trying zenox 0W40 next week. I'm curious about this oil.

It's in now since tuesday and the effect is pretty much what the oil company predicted. So far I have used Castrol 5w40 magnatec, kroon oil 5w40 emperol, and havoline 5w40 fully synthetic and this 0w40 zenox outperforms them all. Especially on cold starts. The engine is just plain quieter and much more responsive.

Only downside to this oil is its base color: milky. Makes it hard to detect headgasket problems (not that I expect any).
