Maybe this is already common knowledge. When putting my EAT chip in (93 525i) I noticed a wisp of smoke from the wiring bundle that goes to the set of relays next to the computer. The bundle comes from below and makes a turn so it can plug into the relays. When it makes the turn it runs over a piece of metal. The insulation on one wire had rubbed through and had the potential to cause a problem. I think I bumped it and it caused the minor short and smoke. I wrapped the wire and the bundle and the edge that it was rubbing on with tape so it's probably good as long as I'll have the car. It was pretty clear it had been happening for a long time.
Yeah, I know I probably should have pulled the battery. But in this case it's a good thing I didn't.
