View Full Version : Replace Rotors Every Brake Job?

I just got home from my indy, where I had my PS lines done (M60 engine so there is no room <> DIY!) and my flexdisk/Guibo joint. He pointed out that I need new belts, which is correct and my rear brakes need replacing. Fine. He then told me that I should replace the rotors EACH time I do a brake job.

Is this true? It seems heavy handed, but after 4 years with an M60 I'll believe anything. Any thoughts?

Ive only done one brake job since i got this car but Ive been told that one might as well do rotors if they do pads....

the rear roters are only 25 bux each, why not?

If they are well within tolerance, run 'em again

Why replace the rotor when it is within spec?

The indy's owner's wife quoted me $115 for two rotors for the back brakes. I'm all for doing a job right with OEM parts, if it is necessary but.. Do you have a suggestion where I can buy rotors for significantly less, where shipping won't kill me?

I think I'm going to do the brake job this weekend on the existing rotors, and if a shimmy results in the near future I'll spring for the rotors.

It's hard to navigate the advice from the indy's and dealers and not be taken advantage of but not entirely dismiss their advice...thank God for this board!

All in all, I still love driving and working on my e34, so it's still worth the headaches!

ditto
My rotors went over 100K. That was three or four sets of pads, a couple drivers schools, and a couple seasons of autocrossing.
And the old mechanic once told me to use old rotors to break in new pads, and vice versa. Never did figure out the reason for that, so the new rotors got new pads too.

How much was the PS Line job?

Great advice, thanks everyone. I'm going to run on the current rotors, and see if there is a shimmy problem. If so I'll report.

Thank you for all of the great input; this is such a great board.

With the BMW CCA 10% discount, labor was $248 and the parts were roughly $300. I'm judicious about what I'll bring into my indy, but with the M60 hogging all of the space I decided to pass on this one. If I had an M50 then this would have been a DIY, which saves half.

If within spec reuse 'em. Scuff them up so the new pads won't take forever to bed in.

Usually every other brake job for me, but never done on an e34.

If you're not having a shimmy, pulsation, or wobble problem right now, and the brake pads are just worn (and there's no obvious high edge on the rotor that might cause a problem with new pads), just put the pads in (use proper anti-squeel goop) and keep on trucking. I find buying that kind of stuff from Steve Haygood at http://www.stevehaygood.com/, but don't rely on email, pick up the phone and call him. And I'd use Balo rotors. What pads are you going to use? You do know you can get rid of nearly all the dust by just choosing the right replacement pads? Right?
