Pull your battery cable for 10 mins. That should reset it.

Try looking through the TEST functions of the OBC, there is a setting to adjust the Range factor (some value stored that should automatically update depending on what car it is in, but most of the time is stuck at 100 anyway), maybe changing this value might reset the Range.

avg mpg and avg speed function is also out...

this might be the reason why range is mixed up.

speedometer is working mpg under the speedo is moving also...

can anyone guess what the problem may be?

My range function is pretty accurate. On pure highway I'm pretty sure i can get over 400 miles to the tank. I get 300-350 a tank with my highway/city driving to work.

When I first purchased my 1989 535i I had the identical problem. Recieved a lot of advice about resoldering and such. Sounded to much like a pain in the ass. Bought a OBC from ebay ($55 or so). It works great.
Would advise the same.

In my case it was a bad OBC. There were some suggestions that a bad connection existed between the instrument cluster and the OBC because, like yours, my speedometer worked fine (meaning the signal was good). I had no intention of pulling out the cluster or screwing around with wiring bundles. Just sounded like looking for more trouble to me. It is a 17 year old car with a thousands of heating/cooling cycles and constant vibrations. Wiring insulation does not need additional abuse by yanking and poking around if it can be avoided.

IMHO
