Mileage w/o key

Is the odometer supose to work (light up) by pressing button on instrument cluster without the key in ignition? Again this is a '89.

My 1990 535i displays the odometer if the trip meter button is pressed with no key in ignition. I believe that is the normal behavior.

I'm reasonably certain that function was added as an update shortly after the digital odometers were introduced in the '88 model year on the E32. It may not have gotten to the E34 for the first year, either. Yours may be acting as designed. I'm sure other '89 E34 owners will chime in.

It does not light up and if it is supposed to I was wondering what to look at.

your car amy be to early of manufacture for this option as previously stated, all later years have the function.
