View Full Version : My car, cut in two

Time to say bon voyage to my 740 parts car.

I sold the front clip, and not having much time, or inclination, to strip the whole car, I elected to simply cut it in two.

A sawzall will cut through this thing like butter. I did this about two weeks ago, hence the rust.

Now, I'm sure, you're wondering what the back half of the car looked like.

Incidentally, it's here until wednesday, and you're welcome to have anything you like off of it if you stop by to claim the booty. ARgh.

And, finally, my favorite picture of the car: the cheap bodywork that was done at some point, falling apart. In fact, the rear edge of the car was cut off and replaced, poorly...

we've used reciprocating saws, extricating patients out of car wrecks. Nothing beats the Jaws of life though. For an exercise we cut a 3rd door into a 2 door car to access the back seat

Oh man....You should see that car in person, the body is unbelievable. Rockers rusted through, dents everywhere. Thankfully it's not on the road anymore.

It's a '91 535/5, too.

The funniest thing about that car is that the owner had a fake (?) name painted on the driver's front door, just below the glass....in blue and purple paint.

...yeah...

Huuh, I could have used many parts of the 740, such as the facelift center console with the ashtray and the wood. Too late.
Is the blue polishing cloth still in the trunk tool box? That you can send me as present :D
Tell me when you cut the next one ;-)

Haha, sorry Erich, I heard other cries of disappointment for cutting the center console. But it was a mess, not worth saving. I saved the ash tray, nothing else.

I wish I had a picture of the trunk floor in this car. I, unfortunately, locked the trunk while removing the actuator, and I don't feel like drilling out the cylinder to open it again.

Point is, the hacks who did the bodywork on this car didn't take the time to straighten the floor, it is crumpled bad enough that there are cracks in the spare tire well and the spare no longer fits. Amateur night bodywork.

They also didn't take the time to install the tool kit or lining on the trunk lid, so none of that stuff was there.

i can take a look at the console in the last 740 we got at the shop and see if it's still good if you want

Maybe shipping to Japan will be too costly, winfred. Thanks for your offer.
But you could do me the favor and check the weight of the console with the ashtray and the wood in front of the ashtray as well as besides the ashtray.
And what color is the leather?
In any case there will be people interested on bimmerboard E32. If you send me pics and the price I will post it there.
Shipping to Japan you can calculate here

Nothing odd about it. Body guys need parts to rebuild cars. If a car is whacked well enough, sometimes it's necessary (or just easier) to cut the old off and weld on the new.

Fairly normal. The back half of this 740 -- bumper, trunk lid, panel and pass rear quarter, was an '89 735 a few years ago.

I heard a few weeks ago about a woman who thought she'd bought a low mileage, year old E39 540. Good price, looked good, but seemed to have some electrical problems.

She brought the car to a friend of mine. He inspected it and realized that the only part of the car that was 540 were the fenders and the driver's side door frame to the B pillar (and door plate). The rest of the car, even the firewall, was an early E39 528.

Cheap (ethnicity deleted for the PC sensitive) rebuilders glued the body harness together and called it a day. Try explaining that one to your customer. People will stop at nothing cutting corners to make a buck in this world.

Kalevera - I'm curious, what do you mean by "sometimes it's necessary (or just easier) to cut the old off and weld on the new." ?

Are you saying that a front end could be welded on to the back end of another car or the bits like the wings, bonnet etc will be taken off to be used on another car?

Do you know if E34 serie 5 have the same tickness of insonorisation foam in between the floor and the carpet as we see in this serie 7 ?

I haven't compared the two side by side but remembering back to when I was running cables for the stereo from the front to the rear of the car, I'd say the foam in the 5 series is pretty much the same thickness - it was a good inch and a half or so.

Both are common, but the former tends to happen on cars that have a high residual value and are worth the work. Not so much on an E32.

Here's an example of this kind of repair (poorly done, which is why I have the picture) --

Yes, they bolted on the rear clip. Incidentally, I think this was a CPO car... :)
