I got my new tweeters installed and they look heaps better than the blank panels that used to be there:

The problem is that I can't get them to work! The first junction behind the radio looks like this:

The correct wires for the tweeters join up here and everything is powered. After this the loom disappears under the dash. The next thing is this junction where the bass speakers (kick panel) and the tweeter wires join up:

According to the wiring diagram, the tweeters should be powered from here but there is no signal! The tweeters work as I have tested them independantly. The bass speakers have power but not the tweeters. Any suggestions? I am running the original 'anti-theft' radio.

Sorry about the large pictures. At least they are clear.

Dont have my Bentleys here so cant comment on how its supposed to be wired. But if you test continuity from the speakers to those multiplugs you should find an answer. You will know the wiring colours so you can also put your meter across one of the pairs of wires to see if you get a click through the tweeter. Hope that doesnt insult your intelligence:-)

Not at all but I don't have a meter. I have used to the speaker itself to test signal resulting in my disappointment. Thanks for your advice.

You will not find your tweeter wires behind the radio. The outputs of the radio are low level into the factory amp in the trunk. You can find the tweeter wires at each door or at the factory amp.

You will need to remove each of your factory door panels to access the tweeter wires. I cannot remember, off hand, what the wires colors are. try looking on www.bmwe34.net for an amplifier wiring diagram. Remember to look for the outputs of the amp, not the inputs.

I've done that same upgrade myself. My car didn't have the factory amp in the boot, so there was no signal making its way to the tweeters. I traced the wiring back the same as you have done, and added some wiring so that they are joined to the front woofers. I also added an in-line passive crossover to the new tweeters. Its not that big of a job, a couple of hours was all it took.

Here's a link that you might find helpful, as I basically just followed the color codes checked the signal from the stock amp to the connection near the speakers when had erratic sound on my front speakers on the auto 525, goodluck!

Yes I have the wires connected from inside the door panels. Thanks Myles for your tips I will probably do the same thing as you have done.
