hey guys. i need some help on this one.
today my tranny feels like its not kicking into gear correctly. it will say "ED" on the dash but the car just feels like it has no power. Not wanting to move or antyhing. It just rolls foreward slowly then the tranny will kick into gear and feel fine. I tested it out in my friends driveway and when I put it in neutral the car actually started backing up. any ideas?
im thinking my valve body is sticking or worse...
basically what im saying is whenever i put the car in drive my car will just rev but move VERY slowly when accelerating from a stop. The after a few seconds it will kick into gear then drive ok. just when i get my style 19s today this **** happens. ugh. someone wanna donate a 6-speed to a poor kid?

Classic valve body problem. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR NO MORE. What happens is that in drive, your reverse gear is also engaged. This is very classic and in fact, it did happen to me. I can try to accelerate harder but barely freaking move... like parking brake is on.
In neutral, it feels it is in reverse also.
If you attempt to drive, you will break a part in tranny... band I think... and then that would means total rebuilt.

Oh and call up Kirt Koeller to ask how much for valve body rebuild. At this time, it is also time to change the fluid too to any of the one BillR and I talked about.

anyone got a link and how much is this gonna set me back? I had to drive it home from my friends house. About 8 miles. So I hope I didnt do any serious damage to it. Is this a DIY or something I need a shop to do? Also It did this at every stop light but after a while. Say Ill be at idle then the car will just feel like its in neutral. I need to rev it to get it going and then it will kick into gear and shift fine.

you can DIY, guessin about 300-400 bux. Tiger is correct that you do NOT want to drive it anymore.

Help me please....M20 1990 525i (266K)
I think I'm having the same problem. The car starts and runs fine in the first gear, but once I start applying the gas it revs to 3000-5000 RPMs before kicking into gear....once it does that it's fine for the rest of the ride. As soon as I turn it off however, it does it again...same scenario.
Usually, when I stop - full stop, the car will jerk a couple of inches but take off fine and switch gears as well. Is it the tranny or valve body....my other car is in the shop (cosmetics), and this is my only driver
