Curious - about rear dropping from Neut - Drive.

I've got an auto, and I've always been curious as to what EXACTLY causes the rear to drop when you put the car in drive from neutral or park as well I believe.

This is while standing still, no movement besides a running engine with foot on the brake - shifting from N -> D.

yes, but the gear is engaged.

The reason it happens is because when you switch into gear, the transmission begins transmitting torque through the drivetrain in the rear. This happens while your rear brakes are clamping down and not allowing the wheels to rotate. The torque goes through the halfshafts and because they are physically locked on the outter ends, the differential and rear subframe try to rotate. This causes the rear end to squat down.
