how far is too far

hi, so today i probally crossed it when i took two sledge hammers to my gas tank. while changing my fuel pump sending unit i noticed the unit was to long, after two hours of thinking i was sent the wrong part i noticed the previous owner had somehow crushed the gas tank up two inches so i put the head of one hammer down into the bottom of the tank and then carefull to not make a spark beat out the two inches bam it fit and worked. so how far would you of went?

i've run over a gas tank with the big forklift at work in anger, i've also thrown one against the wall after pulling it to only find out that it's ****ed up

i once tied the fuel tank on my truck with twine so i could drive around with it hanging down at a 45 degree angle until i could get a new mounting strap.
