E34 front seat backrest repair

now whenever i touch the backrest adjuster, the backrest on my driver seat just flops down flat (& probably smacking whoever is sitting behind in the passenger seat at the back :).

i'm told this is a common fault - does anyone knows of a simple DIY solution somewhere?

Before you buy new shocks, check if they are properly mounted.

shogun, looking at the pictures, is it feasible to replace the shocks with some rigged coil springs instead (with an axial guide) ?

Not heard of such mod, try it if it works.
