View Full Version : Interesting A/C find (pic)
Hello everyone,
While roaming around under my baby's hood today I decided to take a gander at the A/C spec sticker. To my surprise, this is what it stated:

R-134a in a 1990 build? I was under the impression that the changeover year was around 1992 or so. Anyone else with an early E34 filled with R-134 here?

My 1990 was converted at the dealer some time in the late 90s by the PO.

Perhaps you are right regarding the car being converted, but wouldn't that entail R-134a fittings being installed? My service connections are still R-12 type.
P.S.: Its such a good thing that I didn't opt to top off the system with refrigerant just after purchase. My mechanic thought it had R-12 in it.

I see no indication of the front end being replaced. The fenders have the original VIN number stickers in the proper places. Is there a VIN sticker on the front bulkhead somewhere too? Carfax comes up clean on the car as well. Gonna go double check for any signs of body work.

and they used the wrong sticker
and they used the wrong sticker
Went out and took a careful look. Observations:
1) Bolts securing the top of the bulkhead to fenders show evidence of being removed.
2) Hood mounting bolts look like they've had a wrench on them in the past.
3) Radiator is a 2002 production date. Could have been just a regular replacement.
4) The hood is missing its VIN sticker.
So I guess you guys are right and at a certain point the hood and top bulkhead piece were replaced. That would mean that I probably still have R-12 in the system too. At least its nice to know that for whatever reason the parts were replaced, they were still color-matched (neither was repainted when I got the car).
