Is there a better exhaust system than the original? The old exhaust must weight a ton and it is a monster. Got to be a better way.

Well, you can install another custom made one with very thin steel sheet, but don't be surprised that it will sound like a tin can then.

ON a Bimmer they haven't a chance. It might weight a lot, but its a dual system which is pretty unrestricted. A single 3" might be lighter, but it won't be as good on an un-massively modified car. 'tis just the way it is- its really part of the value of owning one- they are just designed damned well.

i don't see why a good exhaust shop couldn't improve on our exhaust systems, particularly that monstrous cat / muffler thing on the back of my m50 525. it's still a street production exhaust. whether it will improve power or be status quo, i don't know, but i also don't understand how it would lose power.

you could always go on a diet, and lose the weight behind the wheel...might be a cheaper way to lighten the load if you're only looking to get rid of 20lbs
