a faulty u-joint/cv-joint/driveshaft?
When I select REVERSE, there is a clunk - almost as if there is some slack being taken up in the driveline before things totally engage.
It ONLY happens in reverse - It has NEVER made this noise when selecting a forward gear.
Transmission seems fine - I've had no issues there. There is a VERY slight vibration when I accelerate - gone by the time I reach 15-20 mph, and I suspect it's the center bearing/mount.
I have a flex disc and center bearing/mount ready to go, but I don't want to install these parts if there's a faulty u-joint/cv-joint in the driveshaft, which may ruin the new parts.
The local independent shop told me that it wasn't necessary, nor did he recommend installing a new center bearing/mount while replacing the flex disc. He said if the center bearing/mount is shot, then more than likely the driveshaft's rear u-joint is probably starting to sieze.
What's the difference between a u-joint and a cv-joint, and how do I test each for play/wear/whatever?
btw, the car has about 120,000 miles.
