Don, don't the E28 ones not fit e34? I know the tailshafts are different (differnt car, makes sense) but isn't there something about e28 motronic that makes this impossible? I would have thought that the later e28 ones would, they have very similar Motronic. :) Nick

The earlier e28 m30 Getrags have a different mounting for the shift bracket, but there aren't any Motronic concerns for putting one in an e34. The e34 only uses the front harmonic balancer for the speed sensor. Where one could have complications would be putting an e34 Getrag 260/6 in an older e28. Even then, the mounting holes are present in the newer Getrags for the flywheel reference sensors. I'm not sure about the tailshaft length in older m30 Getrags. At most, one could resolve that with a custom driveshaft.
My good friend Mike Oswald put an early e28 Getrag 265 in his e32 735iL with no problems, after a little custom shifter & driveshaft cutting & splicing & welding. The only Motronic issue is one should put a manual DME chip in the automatic DME to resolve hunting idle issues, but even if using the stock auto DME, the issue is minor.
87 & 88 e28 m30's and 87-89 e24's use the identical Getrag 260/6 that the e34 uses. The later model 260/6 Getrag is identifiable by looking on the bottom and noting that it has a robust row of cooling fins cast into it full length:

Aww crumbs, that's fantastic Don, thanks! I have an e28 flywheel about to get machined up, new bolts and throwout bearing. I also have both 3.46 and 3.91 diffs to try.
Just need to get:
shifter, boot, linkage and shifter cover trim,
driveshaft (modified)
clutch kit, slave cylinder, clutch fluid reservoir and hudraulic hard line,
stick shift pedal assembly,
gear box support member
and the gearbox
It's so much easier now Don. This year I should have everything. :) Nick

Another interesting bit... The first year E32 and last year E24's used an odd-ball transmission, different output-shaft length, different reverse gear, and different output flange. IIRC, the older E32 trans has a shorter driveshaft than the newer one (meaning a longer trans). I happened to stumble across one of these gems at the local U-Pull-It yard and had to get a custom driveshaft made to fit up with it in my E34. All other internals and the case are the same according to RealOEM. The shifter on the early E32 trans also used a special linkage to clear the guibo.
Yeah, gotta be careful what year parts are sourced & expect a few surprises. My donor parts were from an 06/87 e32 which still had the 2nd harmonic balancer on the output yoke, item 32:

That's probably why the shift linkage is different. It has a bend in the shift link to clear it. I didn't worry about the driveshaft since I planned all along to put a rebuilt one in it. The old on from my automatic was starting to get vibration issues.
wow i saw a 6 speed from an E39 540 asking i think $2,700 for the BIN

i trash can those whenever i have a driveshaft off that has one, loose the bastard and it's good to go with some new bolts

The donor car was a 1/87 and didn't have one of those balancer's attached to the trans/driveshaft... The driveshaft looked new(er) too, perhaps the PO of the donor car hucked it in the trash as well....
