According to the BMW service manual, you gotta:
1. Connect mirror base on the mirror socket with an approx. 45 degree turn.
2. Turn mirror base until it engages on the mirror socket.

The mirror comes off by rotating the mount/stem 60 degrees in either direction. The metal button on the windshield is hexagonal with beveled edges, and the back pocket of the mirror has a triangle of 3 metal rods that have enough spring to capture it when rotated into position and release when rotated 60 degrees. If the mirror is pryed off without rotating, it will bend the rods and they won't hold it snugly.

If the base is still attached to the glass you have to put the mirror onto that at a 45 degree angle, or something like that, it will fit on, then turn mirror the correct way, and it should snap onto the base. Hope that makes sense.
If you broke the base off the glass, then you'll obviously need some rear view mirror glue.
