Interest in E34s ? Are you kidding ? What else gives the same driving pleasure ? Did I mention that the price was right ?
I've been looking for a manual 5 series, E34 or E39, for some time but as you know they are all imports and rare as hens teeth. My '88 model E34 is getting a little long in the tooth with over 275k km on it.
Bought this one because No 3 son got his licence the other day and we were a car short and I think it is important to drive manuals for the first few years of ones driving career.
The fact it was a manual was more important to me than the all wheel drive, but with low kms (105K) and the fact it was first registered (in Fiji) in 11/97 meant it has only been on roads for 10 years. Its service history is also good.
It has dual airbags as well which is nice and it is nice to own a rare model too.
Also the early E39s (before 04/98) in this country were nikasil lined single vanos engines and this is an iron block single vanos engine.
My mechanic looked it over before purchase and apart from some front end ball joints that need replacing (already ordered from BMA) he gave it the nod of approval.
Main differences driving it are the extra grip and lower gearing compared to my RWD E34.
It has a totally different front end with boomerang shaped control arms apparently similar to X3s as well as a front driveshaft that goes through the sump !
Time will tell how it goes ! ;)

Yes - M50 with single vanos.

I'd love to see some pictures of the drivetrain from underneath... I like to see how they set up the t-case, front axle, etc...
Next time it goes on a lift, make sure you take your camera...:D

History is almost perfect.
The 18s were put on to attract punters in a dealer's caryard and then the original 16" style 6s went walkabout.
Will look for some style 6s eventually but not a major priority now.

I think i speak to everyone when i say, we all want to see a 525ix. I still can't believe it has rack and pinion steering

Does it ? - I haven't got that far yet.
$2200 for the transfer case, "no further intervention permitted".
You vill not attempt repair of dis unit as vee have deemed your skills inadequate.

Not being an engineer, I certainly wouldn't be cracking open a transfer case to fix or modify it.
I suppose if you have the skills, then what they recommend doesn't matter.
Same as TVs and electrical appliances - if you don't know what you are doing, don't fiddle !
Perhaps not silly, just sensible ?
My attitude is if it's already broke then I can't make it much worse. The net effect is that if not successful I'm usually no worse off.
It pisses me off a bit when I can't even take a crack at it because there are no parts offered.
How many times do you encounter a minor part of an assembly has failed, you are well able to fix this but no parts are available?
I'm not saying I could repair one of those cases, but there certainly are those who could.
I did learn my lesson on TVs though after taking a hit from a very potent capacitor.

Fantastic buy Zeuk, that has to be the pinnacle of gr34tness!!! There was a 525ix touring going in Queensland recently, also a grey import from the uK but an older ver, guy wanted like AUD$20k for it...

There was a 525ix touring going in Queensland recently, also a grey import from the uK but an older ver, guy wanted like AUD$20k for it...
Saw the ad for that touring the other day - high 200ks as I recall. Down to 16k last I saw.

However he would have to have the time and the inclination, but for something like this he'd be interested to see it at least from an engineering perspective... so that would help.

you'd be amazed at what some mechanics can do, there is one here ex-army who can fix any transmission device known to man it seems, usually when they stuff up its a circlip or a bush or something similar and mundane (and obvious when you look at it) I've seen the insides of a few transfer cases and all they are are circlips, bearings gears, shafts and splines.
