I need some expert opinions.
I put 10w30 mobil 1 into the 540 about 1000 miles ago. Then it looks like I should've been using 15w40 and recommended 5w40. Did I harm the engine?
I'm about to change the oil to 5w40 synthetic. Is it recommended to change the filter (only used for 1000 miles) or should I let the filter in for another 4000 miles then change it?
Thank you.

probly no harm.
the PO ran 10w-30 in it. I use shell rotella t synthetic 5w-40 in my car. Engine is a lot smoother and quieter now.

your good, I used 5w-30 M1 before switching to the 0w-40. Did you switch from regular oil? If you did then you might as well change the filter out from the initial flushing action from the thinner synthetic...but I wouldnt sweat it either way.
edit: If I was you I wouldnt bother changing the 10w-30 out yet but change it earlier than 5000 miles due to the initial flushing action if this is your first change to synthetic.

I would wait until 3000 miles have elapsed & swap to Mobil 1 0W-40 plus change filter as well.
From there change every 5,000 miles.

This thread got me to wondering...the Touring I bought recently was serviced regularly by BMW. The reciepts leave no indication of what oil they used. What do you guys think the dealer would use in a '93 with M50?

PO said only synthetic after alusil block swap. So it's not a matter of switching to synthetic, just that if I should change the filter or not.

Hey where do you find that 20w50 m1? I like to run the thicker oil in the summer because my m50tu has a rather noisy valve train on startup with the 0w40. I found 15w50 @ walmart (ewww) but thats the closest I can get, thanks.

I would say don't bother changing the oil... however, if you do, no need to change filter.
