**** if i know probably part of the hardening process, that what color the average bmw cast crank is when fairly clean, it's a 97 528 84mm crank in a 88 super E block with the super E rods and I pistons, I stroke is 75 mm E is 81mm
"why is the crank green?"

The M52 is a forged crank.

cast absorbs more harmonics than forged which has certain advantages.

Interesting - I was under the impression that the M52 were forged. Are your cranks from iron or aluminum M52s? Also winfred how much would you want for the crank/rod/piston setup? The only reason I wouldn't do it (aside from being broke and unemployed) is that I was really hoping to have 8.3:1 compression to hold about 28 psi of boost from this holset. Going to the M52 internals moves me back up to 10.5:1 and a net of 8.8:1 which wouldn't let me run crazy high boost on pump fuel :(

iron, i have two more 2.8 84mm units, what you need to check on is what did bmw do to compensate for the longer stroke from the 2.5 to the 2.8, did they change the rods and pistons or just the rods, if the wrist pins in the same location (height) you can use m50 slugs, i don't really know as i never paid attention but i herd a rumor
ps i think the aluminum block motors at least for our market are the m52tu (double vanos)

I want to say it's just in the pistons as the non vanos pistons are dished and the M50TU pistons are flat. I am finding out
