Hi,

BMW 530i. VIN GE89537.

I have water seeping under and into the rear drivers side carpet in the front. I suspect it's the metal/rubber grommeted BMW step plates on the interior of the door frame. The problem is, I don't know what this is called or where to find this part. Any help naming this part with Mr. http://www.realoem.com/ is appreciated. I can't find the damn thing. Thank you.

Sounds fishy to me. What about the vapor barrier/membrane door seal? I know it's a real problem on E39s. If anyone's been inside your door, you might want to check it. Just get a roll of sheet plastic from a building supply store (Visqueen is one brand) and you'll have a lifetime supply.

Sounds like your sunroof drainpipes are clogged.

Having experienced the same thing at the rear of my e39 I would recommend checking the vapour barrier in the door first.

Pull off the inner door panel, keep the door open and play a hose on the outside of the door around the window rubbers. It took about 10 seconds then I had a waterfall from the tiniest hole in the vapour barrier seal. It's amazing how much water actually gets inside the door!

I looked at buying the real BMW bitumen sealing strip but it worked out at £35 from the $tealer so I bought a bitumin based drainpipe/down pipe sealant from a plumbing supplies for £1.50. I removed the complete vapour seal, cleaned up all traces of the original sealant and then re sealed the vapour barrier with the drain pipe stuff. Let it cure off the car until it films over and then press it to the door. For added security I duct taped it in place until the stuff set. No problems since, however I warn you the car stank for 3 days whilst the stuff set...... :D

I don't believe your problem is with the rubber tread plates on the step as water doesn't flow upwards. If you eliminate the vapour barrier I'd look at the sunroof drains next.
