I was going to drain the power steering and refill with fresh ATF which my 89 535i takes. Problem is I cannot find Dexron 2 ATF. What do you guys use and what is acceptable if I cannot find the Dexron 2 ATF? Also does anyone else know how many quarts it takes to change? Bentley manual does not give any amount.

Dexron 2 has been superceeded by Dexron 3 and now Dexron 4. Either of the newer Dexron's should be fine. Fill isn't very much, maybe 2-3 qts.

fill on mine was about a quart, I flushed it 2 times to try and get out residual.

I don't know if yours has a filter in the ATF tank. If so, replace in any case.
In my car I changed it after 18 years the first time, found a lot of very small particles in the filter and well as in the Pentosin tank.
Just out of curiousity I filtered all the old liquid in a coffee filter to see how much wear could have happened on seals and other parts.

ahh the infamous unreplaceable E31 filter...LOL Asspuppets assembled mine or something. The new filter still looks at me every day when I go to the barn.

So Dexron 3 or 4 should work. Thanks. I don't believe it has a filter. I swished around with my finger and couldn't feel anything.
