despite everything else that happened today iu was quoted $200 to ship that 5-speed from alabama to PA. are trannys really that heavy or are they trying to make money off me?

they are doing both. covering their ass AND making a little profit. How much would it cost to go get it?

that 5-speed is in alabama unfortunatley. if someone is close to it would they wanna pick it up for me and then ship it? I would pay someone else to do it for me. Add $50 ontop of the shipping charge. I was thinking more along the lines of $75-$100 to ship.

if it's going freight truck then 200 is not that horrible, if it's going ups then your getting ****ed, the average bimmer 5 speed is light enough to go ups

I feel for you Markus, but you are only saving $50 to go through all this trouble. When you are ordering online, just look at the shipped price unless it's outrageous. I don't know the dimension of the tranny, but try Greyhound if you can get someone in AL to pick it up for you. Greyhound stuffs get around in a hurry and they might be cheaper.
We need to get someone with access to a lift and tools then we can really pimp our cars out. Do what Antreib just did would be a nice learning experience.

If you want to go through the trouble, then set up the shipping yourself. Call a freight company, fill out their waybill/shipping forms, pay them and have it picked up at said address. The guys on the other end may still get their pound of flesh by charging you to stick it on a pallet etc. I shipped an M50 engine block (twice the weight) 100 miles for $80 US this way.

I have gotten similarly annoyed with the shipping on some teak furniture I bought. Then I calculated what it would cost for me to rent a truck and buy the gas to go get it. As outrageous as the shipping looked, it was cheaper than me getting it without including the day or two of my time (and plane ticket, taxi to truck rental, etc). In general, though, if you do not have a shipping savvy seller OR a brother in the LTL business, you are open to getting screwed even if a better deal than you going to get it.

I used Dayton Freight once to ship a transmission from the East Coast to Wisconsin for around $75. This was about three years ago though.
a tank of Premium Gasoline is $70
$70 fill up.. thank you very much.
Imagine how much it costs to drive a diesel truck 500 miles... pay the gas.. tolls.. driver... wear and tear.. insurance...

Is this trans from Vines? Because if so, part of that shipping is the return shipping for the core. They claim they pay for it, but not really.
It costs about $50 to ship a trans UPS/FEDEX, which is what they do. So they're making a little on top of the $100 it costs them.

I shipped a Getrag 280 (M5 tranny) from California to me in Calgary, Alberta w/ FedEx Ground. I think the cost was about $120 US. The Seller built a plywood box for the transmission to ensure it arrived safely.

Just had a tailgate for my '96 F250 shipped by Forward Air from Las Vegas to Cincinnati for ~$80. Tailgate weighs around 50 lbs strapped to a pallet, larger dimensions than a transmission, nearly the same weight.
