So I've got a bit of rust. I paint over it with the BMW colour and finish, but after a winter, the paint comes off, and the rust returns.
I saw chemicals at Canadian Tire that claim to turn the rust into oblivion (into a base coat rather). Is that reliable info or just marketing hogwash ?
Is it better to sand the rust down to the bare metal, or else ?

I'm pretty sure it's for real... can't give you any longterm updates yet, but I just used Rust Bullet (available on amazon, etc), and it was real easy. Paint on, and it converts rust into non-rust :D

I will second that use Rust Bullet. Go to their web site and check out the test videos. I just coated all four of the doors just on the bottom where they typically rust. This coating is good for ten years and you don't have to do a lot of preping

Oh I forgot get the small cans. This stuff drys out pretty quick and if you get a big can it will dry out before you can use it again. There is a warning about not getting it on your skin, they are right it takes several days for it to wear off.
