I heard the quality of Mobil 1 is not what it used to be. :( My understanding is that it is no longer true synthetic oil anymore do to loosing their case with Castro. I still use Mobil 1 0w-40 in my E34. Has this altered your decision in anyway? Also, have you seen the new high mileage Mobil 1? Anyone using this in you E34?

say no to high mileage mobil 1. I know two people who lost otherwise perfectly good engines immediately after using the stuff.
I still use good old castrol dino, changed every 3-4k.
I've never had a problem with it, had Chevy 350 s go 300,000k + with it, and had turbo i4 engines apart after 50k with 0 wear.

I've recently read a real-world test report that showed Mobil 1 to be one of the worst oils on test... I need somewhere to host the PDF to post it back up for all to see.
EDIT: B*llocks, it's on my other disk at home, will hunt it down this evening when I get home from work and post it up somewhere.

my car has 255k km, that's around 160k miles, and i used to use MobilS 10w40. i was very unhappy with oil consumption and the way engine worked, and i switched to ARAL 10w40, it's good now.

I've read the same thing and asked the same question here but never got an answer due to post deletion. I have have decided that since I actually want to keep my car that I'm going to start using Amsoil/Redline 5w-40. The cost is about the same, and I know it's true syth. So I won't be running 10K miles on hydrocracked dinosynth and find out too late that I just ****ed myself. So I ordered a crate of Amsoil from their website and done and done. Whether my post or this one gets terminated or not, it's no longer my problem.

No Mobil 1 for me. 0w40 seems very noisy in my 95 525i. I currently use a brew of 4 quarts of 5w50 and 2 quarts of 10w40 castrol syntex. Seems to be much quieter and no cold start rattle I had with thicker oil like 15w40 or even 10w40 in the winter. Just my observation.
