im a cheap bastard, theres no need to tell me that, i dont really NEED a car stereo, but a silver pioneer stereo does not suit the sophisticated black interior. ive been to every shop around me and they sell crap, so ebay is the only way to go....i need opinions on these stereos

Wherever you are, buy it locally. If it goes wrong you have somebody to fix it. Still better buy a BMW radio only and use an Ipod/Iphone.If you must buy off Ebay, go for Nakamichi/Marantz, better quality secondhand than cheap **** new.

The Chinese made JVCs rock. They sound good, are easy to use and light-up red. There's a few with USB and IPod/Aux ins...

i bought a blaupunkt bahamas a few months ago and im very happy with it. you can change the display to any color you want and mine matches up perfectly. it looks stock too and the way the LCD display is, it looks almost OEM. ill have to take a few pics at night to demonstrate. I paid $132 from crutchfield so i cant complain.

Totally agree. No silver, no flashing crap. Just balck with orange. Clarion used to have a DZX 535, 735 and 835 model that was just that. You could probably find a good used one on the 'Bay. Also, there is a new Panasonic that Bavarian Sound Works has. Probably available elsewhere.

I've just fitted one of these:

BT2500 (http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=MEX-BT2500&site=odw_en_GB&pageType=Overview&imageType=Main&category=ICA+CD+Tuners)
And the matte black of the unit blends in well with the dash. Yeah it's blue *shudder* but you can put it in low illumination mode.
The mobile phone handsfree and streaming MP3 functions totally kick ass.
Only clocked in at £120 as well, though the lack of line level outs was irritating. Had to get an adaptor to drop to RCA outs.

blue doesnt look too bad. some of the new pioneers nowdays look good in our BMWs. I had a pioneer unit in my M3. looked OEM and sounded awesome, a lot better than the 2 blaupunkts I have had.

my ol sony had a similar "blue face" to yours but i stripped it down and inserted some coloured lighting film and now its all orange http://www.users.bigpond.com/kevinfishing/sony.jpg
the unit was actually silver so i painted it black as well- so dont be put off by wrong colour screen or unit -you can change them

That looks very good. I give you props on that one, very creative. Did you put tape over the buttons or vasoline? I heard vasoline will not allow the paint to bond to the plastic.

as its a detachable face it was easy to strip down, just a few screws, all the buttons are seperate pieces and i left them silver and just painted the chassis black the bottom row of buttons are one piece and black, the only thing i had to mask was the sony logo which i did with tape

nice, but what type of paint did you use? how expensive of a job was it? where would i get that plastic film from as the lcd is blue so id rather it be red....very creative...would red cellophane do they same job or would it make all murky and unreadable

paint was just a cheap can of matt black- i work in music / corporate a/v area and the coloured film is used in lighting you only need a small piece a visit to a rock lighting company might get you a bit for free-cellophane may work but hard to colour match

I had one similar to this in may last e34:

The panel is a gimmick but it does look good for the price, good on features considering its age, great powerful sound, no real connectivity tho. Mine lit up red when you opened the panel.
Kev535i - thats a sterling job! looks the biz, you're a brave man!

I remember those headunits when they came out, everyone wanted em!
Sony have this ability to come up with drool-worthy kit.
