Was walking in Walmart yesterday and saw they are now selling a house brand synthetic oil. Not too many weights - 5w-30 and something else.

Claims to be full synth...not a blend.

Price is sure right...$11 and change for 5qts. Has all the right stamps on it as well.

Wonder who makes it for them and if it's any good?

i never had the stones to ask about walmart brand synth on this board, though i've seen it since last year.....its quite pricey for what it is, at 299 per quart, considering that tar-jay locally has m1 quarts for 3.79 right now, and there's the 19.82 5 quart at walmart.

At $2.20 a quart in the 5-quart jug, it's a great price. Apparently, the additive package isn't as comprehensive as Mobil 1 however it should be fine for 5K mile oil changes.

There has been a great deal of discussion of this oil on bobistheoilguy.com. The general consensus is that it is a Group III hydrocracked, and a fair Synthetic. Most agree that for nearly the same price $12.84 per gallon, the Shell Rotella Synth 5w-40 (also a Group III oil) is a better oil.

Bottom line as I see it, for the extra $10 per oil change, or approximately $20 a year, use Mobil 1, a great Group IV PAO synthetic. When you consider that a full tank of gas is now about $40, that $20 is pretty cheap.

Wal-Mart also sells the 18 gallon jugs of Mobil1 for $15-20, it's probably better to go with Mobil 1 because of its quality.
