Hey guys I have a bit of rust forming under the outer, lower door trim bits on all four doors, causing the trim to warp outwards a bit. I'm thinking I will purchase the parts online and have a body guy paint and install them. I realize getting rid of the rust completely is almost impossible but what can I do to minimize the potential of the rust returning?

thanks,

nix

What website are you planning on purchasing the trims from? I am missing a piece from the lower driver's side.

I bought all of mine from BMA, got good prices.

could you help with directing me to the parts on the BMA site? I can never find what I'm looking for on there.

You can use the contact form and ask for pricing on all the parts you require, and they will get back to you within 24 hours, usually. I have had to do that for parts that are not listed on their site. Very friendly and helpful staff.

ok I called BMA and the parts are $60 for each front door piece and $70 for each rear door piece. That's $260 just in parts. Hmmm.

are these the pieces on the bottom of the door, or the middle of the door?

I think you gave them the wrong part. I bought mine locally for $28.

Bottom of the door, just above the rocker. Not the trim in the middle of the door. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HD93&mospid=47412&btnr=51_0782&hg=51&fg=20

parts 12&13

edit: ok now I'm confused. I'm wanting the trim parts that make up the lowest part of the doors. Painted on the outside, black plastic on the inside. I'm not talking about the middle of the door trim that protects your doors from other car doors opening among other things.

That's why I haven't done mine. Rust is starting to creep up above the trim too. I can't justify the cost plus body work when the rust will probably come back.

I have a post with all the prices in it.

Are you sure it's the door and not the metal in the trim pieces rusting?

I was told shipping moldings cost more than moldings themselves. They are long and can easily bend.

the shipping is not expensive, no. at least it wasn't when i ordered.

Here's a shot of the worst of the doors affected.

Thoughts?

pull off the moulding - some of the door is going to come with it. Mine were in a similar state. I cleaned the area with degreaser and used a "rust arresting" treatment. I then painted the area with some paint I had mixed from a friend who runs a bodyshop. Once that had all dried, I put the new trim on. Holding well so far - we'll see once winter comes.

If you want, you can sand down that rust, but I avoided that because it was just removing too much of the door itself - salt is a cruel mistress.

I bought those too originally, but they are the rubber ones. The M-Technic ones (large painted ones) like on the 540 and I guess M5 are like $60-70 each from BMA, about double that from the dealer here.

Try Rust Bullet on the door rust. It does an amazing job

salt is a cruel mistress.

Come winter, I just liberally spray that area and other rust pockets with Rust Check.

I see that your are in toronto. I am lucky in that my car spent a lot of time in toronto before i bought it, but Quebec winters kill cars :(
