View Full Version : What viscosity for summer in Pennsylvania

I run mobile 1 synthetic in my 535, should I go with 5w-30, 10w-30, or 15w-50. I've also seen a 0w-40 what is that all about. Anyways, I do a lot of long highway travel and plan to start autocross as well. Thanks for your answers guys.

You want the thicker oil for summer like 40 weight. I live in Chicago and the BMW service manager from two dealers don’t recommend 15W-50. They say it is too heavy for my car (1995 525i M50). I’m sure it not that much different from M30 engine. I would go with 0W-40. It is great all year round oil. I have it on my M50 engine and it runs better.

0W-40 is the new standard for Mobil One users.

that the availability of Mobile 1 0W40 makes discussions about different North American climates and different seasons pretty much obsolete. Zero is as good as you can get for winter, and 40 should be high enough for most summer weather.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is your best choice for year round use. An alternative if you cannot find it would be Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-40, which is Delvac 1 Synthetic in a different bottle.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is your best choice for year round use. An alternative if you cannot find it would be Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-40, which is Delvac 1 Synthetic in a different bottle.

I too am a resident of the keystone state (northeast area) and prefer 15W-50 Mobil One Synthetic. IMO, the temp range is appropriate for the area.

Delvac 1300 Super is a Group II+ mineral oil (a very good mineral oil at that). Delvac 1 (you can go to Delvac1.com) is a Group IV/V Synthetic diesel oil that is sold by the gallon and drum (there is a big debate over if Mobil 1 0w-40 or Delvac 1 are a better oil for gas engines). Mobil 1 SUV 5w-40 is simply Delvac 1 repackaged in quart bottles.

15w-50 can be used in Penn, but 0w-40 is a better choice. I would suggest you try it. You will find quiter startup from the oil getting to the lifters faster, and in my case, I experience a drop in oil consumption.

I currently use Castrol High Mileage 10W-30 designed for vehicles above 75K miles for my 200K-mile Mazda. I definitley see a difference in oil consumption when I use this oil compared to Mobil 1 10W-30 and Castrol Syntec. The high mileage formula doesn't burn as fast as the others. I don't mix oils in my bimmer but ironically, and lately, I've been mixing Castrol Syntec (1:4) with the high mileage formula in the Mazda in an attempt to get the best from both worlds.

Hi mileage oils tend to be formulated on the heavy end of their respective weights. I.E. 30 weight oil is 9.3-12.5 cst @ 100c, Mobil 1 10w-30 is about 9.8 cst, the castrol high mileage is probably about 12 cst. Also high mileage oils tend to incorporate some group V esters in their oil, as they seal swell. Technically they are semi-synth oils and most people on bobistheoilguy feel they have more synth than oils labled as semi-synth. I hope you aren't running 10w-30 in your BMW, it really wants a heavier oil.
