hey guys. i was thinking about changing my oil tommorow but i was checking the level today and the oil is still pretty clean. i was just thinking about changing the filter and going another 3k. My car just kicked 130k last nihgt and I changed my oil at 127kish. Should I be ok? Im runing shell rotella syntehtic 5w-40.

Sure. If that's real synthetic, then changing it every 6K miles is quite normal. Changing out the filter at 3K is kind of a nicety. Not a bad thing to do at all I would think.

I'd say that's a safe practice.

Sooo .... why would you change your oil at 3K intervals anyway? Just like wasting money? Why even change the filter? What's wrong with sticking with the manufacturer's recommended service intervals of 8 or 10K or 6 months? Unless you are flogging the hell out of your engine or driving in really dirty/dusty conditions, I can't see why you would need to change your oil or filter so frequently. But .... if it makes you feel good, go for it! I'm sure the oil company will thank you for it.

I end up changing the oil filter on mine at half intervals - mainly because Diesel engines totally destroy oil and drop so much crap into it.

That's $50 on oil alone every 3k miles. But again in these days you're filling at least $50 a tankful every 250 to 300 miles on the V8. I do Mobil 1 every 10k miles. Or else I'll be changing oil on at least one car on my fleet every other month.

That's not effing fair!
I want to pay £25/tank for gas instead of $140-150 a tank >: (

Markus, go 5000 miles on oil filter and change at 10,000 miles. Shell is synthetic of class 3 whereas Mobil 1 is class 4. Mobil 1 used to be class 3 so don't worry about it. I am using Shell synthetic on all my cars.
I am going to do an oil analysis on Shell Synthetic when I get close to end of 10,000 miles... which is next year... LOL... unless you happen to get to that before we do... $15 for oil analysis just so you get an idea how 'clean' it still is...

if you want to stop that check out installing a bypass filter, i guess you could say it pollishes the oil where your main filter just wipes it clean

That's an interesting thought, how would one go about that?
My car's already got an oil cooler on it, so there's a place to take off the oil pump feed...

3k miles may be too soon, but 8k is too late. I do oil and filter at 5k intervals, and still use less than 1/2 quart between changes in my 228k mile car. I consider it cheap insurance against engine troubles.

Amsoil Recommended Interval Chart... Just got my first supply of Amsoil stuff. They sent me a bunch of stuff and the chart is one of them.
For TSO oil... Amsoil 0W30 Series 2000 Premium Synthetic Motor Oil. Drain Interval is up to 35.000 miles or 1 year... Severe driving is 17,500 miles or 1 year. This is with Gas engine only.
For ASM, ASL and ATM... all Amsoil SYthetic Motor oil of 0W20, 5W30 and 10W30. Up to 25,000 miles or 1 year and 15,000 miles or 1 year for severe service...
For all European cars, they recommended the AFL 5W40 Sythetic Motor Oil European Car Formula... they said to use oil analysis or use the longest drain recommendation of OEM. I am pretty sure you are going to get much farther than OEM recommendation when you use oil analysis to determine how far you can go.

And, let us know how it goes with those intervals. In the interest of science, of course.
I guess it's kind of like the debate over how many shaves you can get from a razor blade - there comes a point where it'll still shave, but you really have to want to bear the pain.
Good luck.

I never just change the filter. Were does the idea come from that you can change the filter but not the oil at the same time?

on my super high miles car, I change every 3 to 5k miles and I'm glad I do because the oil is not a friendly colour when I take it out.

heres one thing about bypass http://avt.inel.gov/pdf/oilbypass/oilfilter_presentation04.pdf i was trying to find non commercial advertising type stuff to show you, just do some research and see what you can find, remember the toilet paper oil filters? those are bypass type filters and are popular, a lot of dodge diesel guys run those, one guy was getting like 30k miles out of a conventional oil change with oil sample analisys to track wear and oil performance, i think he was changing the paper roll about every 2k and main filter around 10k, the oil added during filter changes sustains the additives in the oil
