I'm not much of a picture guy and my camera sucks, but these are my cars, 1992 525iA (5spd 250g sitting in garage, s52 under consideration) on H&R sport springs and bilst. shocks, rolling gear is 16" 740i rims and nothing special in the way of tires, resprayed four months ago but needs a good wet-sand and buff to finish... the finish.

1990 325i, s52 conversion from Treehouse Racing, gc springs w/ bilst. shocks, z3 1.9 steering rack conversion and ssk, 15x8 Rota Slipstreams in ES100's, Brembo blanks clamped by Ferodo DS2500's, Grant Steering wheel, fully stripped in side with Momo Start and extremely worn/shrank (leather) sport seat (for everyday use). Needs paint, but its what's inside that counts .

I think it's neat. Once you get around to cleaning them up a tad, they'll look beautiful sitting next to each other.

well correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm pretty sure it then doesn't have the ITB's, and the engine is just a modified 328i engine, not the S50/S52 you'd get in european cars, right?

no. it's still an S50 or an S52. Here are the differences between the euro and na versions.

What makes the E36 M3 3.2 unique?
For the 1996 model year, BMW M replaced the E36 M3 3.0 with the faster and more refined 3.2-liter version. For the European market, this model was fitted with the new S50 B32 engine, an evolution of the S50 B30, as well as a six-speed manual gearbox and detail refinements to the chassis. For the U.S. (and later Canadian) market, the M3 received its own powerplant, the S52, plus ASC+T traction control and a host of chassis upgrades. Both versions were also treated to a few cosmetic alterations.

How is the North American 3.2-liter M3 engine (S52) different from the 3.0-liter (S50 B30 USA)?
Unlke the Euro-spec S50 B32, the S52 powerplant is an evolution of the standard production M52 engine. However, it incorporates the following changes over its S50 B30 USA predecessor:
-Increased bore to 86.4mm (from 86.0mm) and increased stroke to 89.6mm (from 85.8mm) for a total displacement of 3,152cc (from 2,990cc)
-More finely balanced camshafts
-Valve lifters, springs and spring seats with reduced mass
-Revised intake and exhaust systems
-OBD II (On-Board Diagnostics, version II) compliance
-Horsepower unchanged at 240 hp (SAE) at 6,000 rpm
-Torque increased to 236 lb/ft at 3,800 rpm (up from 225 lb/ft at 4,250 rpm)
NOTE: E36 M3s equipped with the ZF five-speed automatic transmission are rated at 225 lb/ft of torque at 3,800rpm.

You are correct; it DOES NOT have the individual throttle bodies and in fact is pretty much a bored 328i motor though it was as fast, if not faster, than the Euro car in the 0-60mph range and cost tens-of-thousand less than the Euro version when new enabling far more people to experience the handling of the M3. The success of the E36 M3 in the USA is probably responsible for all the M cars that followed, worldwide. Don't knock it until you've tried it! It would make a nice motor for my '95 525i, for sure.

i never said it was a bad engine, i just know that extra 80hp does something very special :) so you can't say the difference in speed and acceleration doesn't exist, it sounds funny. ;)

are there any intakes on the market that significantly increase the horsepower of a north american s52?

Herb

I think BMP Design HAD a ITB intake for the m/s5X motors. What most do, and what I have, is to swap the '92-95 obdI intake manifold (and incorperated hardware) on to the '96-00 motors. The obdII manifold flows less air do to epa updates, hence the reason the s50 3.0 puts out 240hp and the s52 3.2 puts out the same. The s52 with obdI conversion is said to add ~20hp, but I've never dynod my car to findout. I can catch and pass (going into 5th) a 350z at WOT, though, and I am dead even with a stock STI from 60-130mph.

this would be the obd i intake from an m50? how tough was it to do on your car? did you do this in an m3, or is it a swap for your e34?

is it possible to fit a euro intake onto the north american s52?

1. Yes. 2. No. 3. e30 325i, but can be done for the e34. 4. I don't think so, but I'm really not sure.
