I have universals on my 540i. Get the length exactly like the OEM, then good solder joints with shrinkwrap. Clean off the old connectors and install.
We just put one on my son's 535i Saturday & works slick. No soldering, no crimping, comes with tool-less screw in splice connectors and is hermetically sealed when the grommets & outer case are snapped in place. I bought the 15727 universal at Autozone for $59 (cheaper on-line if you shop around) and they come up on ebay occasionally for $25+

We reset the CEL via momentarily unplugging the DME connector and all is well.
