i made a custom cluster out of the old one, partially because if the cable drive speedo and partially because it's cool, ill take some real pics when it's done but for now these resized camera phone jobs will do

ya gotta get a little creative as the modern m30 doesn't have the back 2 bolts on the right side for the mount bracket, they eliminated them from the block casting but i overcame it with a piece of 1/4" plate bolted to the other 3 free holes and threaded the bracket so i could bolt the back two holes on, not that it needed it but as extra insurance i welded a strip of metal to the back of the bracket for strength

without a plate to bolt the bracket to it would only be bolted to two holes in the block (the motor mount bracket is not that whole thing, the crappy pic doesn't really show it well, the bracket is only the back 4 bolts, the front part is the steel plate i bolted the bracket to) and either bend the motor mount bracket or snap a boss off the block, back in the day m30s had more holes in them :D part of the fun of installing a 90 engine into a 81 car, for my next trick functioning motronic 1.3 in a L-jetronic car http://members.cox.net/wdixon27/rockin.gif

hehehe i even have a functioning check engine light and of all things the 1981 tach and temp gauge seem to be working (no coolant yet but i hit the temp sender with a torch for a second and the gauge came up) i used the engine temp light wire for a check engine light

open exhaust manifolds and a vacuum leak where i forgot to plug the big vacuum nipple for the fuel evap system, i had only just fired it for the first time less then a minute before i took that video, it rolled over about 3 revolutions and popped right off, the car that the engine came from had a 00 inspection sticker and it's been at my yard a few years of that, i stuck in the mustang injectors from my e30 and while doing the wiring i primed the fuel system, i love m30s :D a m50 would of cranked over for a while building compression

couldn't get a tach under 10k that i liked and a 160 mph speedo is sorta dumb on a daily driver, nothing between 120 and 160 or id a gotten it and if i even have need for it i can always buy a 160 and slap it in the same hole

got my flywheel today, i scored a e34 m5 unit off ebay for under 100 shipped, ****er is light at 11.5# should be fun :D it came with a supposed 64k mile clutch and pressure plate but they were toasty, got a m6 clutch coming for just shy of 300 bucks (pricy bitch at 60 my cost over a 535 clutch) from my supplier, looks like it's the same clutch for e24/28/34 m cars

uhhhh.....when the car is finished i don't gotta spend more on it till something breaks :D right now my aim is to get it on the road and comfy so i have more then one car mobile, then once i have it to where i am relatively happy with it as a driver ill start in on the e30 breaking down the newbie and stripping ol busted
ps and while driving the 6er i will be evaluating what major mods i may do to it in the future

got my clutch today and installed it with the m5 flywheel which let me get the tranny in and build the shifter, the original plate style shifter sucks balls so even if the car was a stick and i had the parts i would of still converted it to the rail style shifter, turns out with a getrag 260 from a e34 535 in a old 633 (mines the e12 based instead of the e28 based e24 maybe the same for the later cars) a complete shifter assembly from a e36 fits perfectly (i used a m3 unit i had stashed) and lines up with the hole in the tunnel, as with pretty much all pre 87 cars you gotta make something to bolt the rear shifter support to, in this case there was two handy holes to use, one was a stud for a heat shield and the other was one of the auto shifter holes that i bolted a 6" piece of flat bar to with a tab that i welded to it for the rear mount to bolt to

another little bit of coolness, i was able to get a later style high capacity fan/clutch to fit by bolting it to the back side of the clutch and adding a couple spacers inside of the clutch nut to keep the blades off the crank pulley

should help cooling as the early fans were a little wimpy

well the fan took 2 m20 head bolt washers and i went though 3 shifter rails before i found one that centered up on the hole in the tunnel, but yea i love it when a plan comes together http://members.cox.net/wdixon27/rockin.gif

swapped out the e12 based rear suspension today, gotta a few things to do but it's rolling
primitive side loader diff with boring ratio due to no overdrive, they did come with vented rear rotors though

used the early center mount diff cover to match up with the stock diff mount after i welded up a couple cracks in the body, e12s would pull the floor right out of the trunk if you let them

i used 750il control arms for their vented rear rotors and bearings instead of bushings where they bolt to the subframe, i had 750 arms on my e34 too

it'll find it's way on there eventually if nothing else to get it up and working for the e30, ill probably get a mark d chip for the short term, my 535ia was pretty quick and this thing is probably a couple hundred pounds lighter, ****er outta scoot with the 3.73 gears and 5 speed, haven't figured out what i am doing to the front suspension, it's sitting on unknown drop coils and bilsteins, one rear is leaking bad and one front is locked up solid, ill decide what if anything major i am doing to the front after it's self mobile and i get to know it, i think i have some old e12 strut inserts on the shelf to get it rolling and bouncing, not sure if it's worth trying to install e28/e34 stuff, importing the shimmy to one of the last bmws that didn't have it, nah i don't think so, but i may get creative with struts and maybe make some sort of adapter plates to use e34 struts for their brakes (and abs tone rings, yes i am thinking about it :D ) on the e12 suspension

no pics yet but they look just like regular trailing arm joints except they have boots where you'd normally see the side of the bushing, arms are same but the hubs and brakes have the usual e32 offset instead of the e34 offset, so you can't take rotors and calipers off the back of a e32 and put them on a e34, but you can swap in the complete arms if you want the vented rotors from a 740/750, same sweped area and pads as e34

got a few things done today, moved the motor back about a inch to another set of holes in the crossmember, got plenty of room for the fan now and solved a issue i didn't like with the driveshaft, had to remake the shifter but that's fairly easy and now that i am happy with it i built a exhaust system (front half e34, a couple feet of pipe and the catback from a e28 535) to get it by till i can score a header and build something better, with the open manifolds silenced i focused on the cooling system and got it to where it would keep itself happy, buttoned up the rear brake hydraulics, did the parking brakes yesterday, had to extend the cable tubes as they are pretty short on the e12 based e24s, about 205mm shorter then a 635, buttoned up the under hood wiring and got a battery installed yesterday too

dug up enough crap to build a cold air intake, used the rest of the intercooler pipe that i made the one for my e34 from, still need to build a shield so it's not a hot air intake

guess i need to get off my ass and build a clutch pedal so i can drive it, all it needs to test drive is rear shocks (i just bolted the e12 shocks to the mounting points to roll it around, i need e28 or e34 shocks with the pilot stub that the bolt goes though that takes the shearing stress off the bolt) dog bones and a rear swaybar

it's possibly good for a hp or two, one thing is it sounds faster, the ****er defines the term induction roar on a m30 :D it's just a piece of 3" od pipe with a slight bend to angle the filter away from the radiator toward the headlight, you could probably use pvc and slip a piece of flexible reflective drier vent over it (to kill off a little heat and hide the fact that's it's drain pipe) as for a shield, it's just a piece of aluminum available from lowes or home depot, it's thin enough that you can use the edge of a counter top (i used the gap between the drawers of my tool box) as a brake, mock up with a piece of cardboard and copy it in metal, seen people use plexiglas and build a box around the filter or just screen it off from the rest of the engine compartment

I have a similar intake on my Subaru ... I also have an upgraded exhaust and I can't hear that at all over the intake ... it's audible in another car when you get on it ...

it's alive, swapped out the ****ed left front bilstein and changed the temp sensor so the gauge (wrong range sender, and haven't completed my custom cluster yet) would work and drove it home, doesn't drive too bad for having **** tires and no rear sway bar (need to build some body brackets) the old 4 pot front brakes seem to be playing nice with the big ass vented e32 rears but i haven't really abused it yet, doesn't take a lot to light up the back tires and i haven't installed the eat chip yet, the lf bilstein was locked tighter then dicks hat band, i took it apart to see if something screwed up with the bump stop but besides being oily and partially dissentigrated it was ok, it would move ok till it got to ride height and stop hard, i found a matched pair of old orange boge cartridges on the shelf and stuck em in there till i decide what i want to get, ill need to think about if i want to roll the dice on bilsteins as i've seen a bunch of bad ones in the last coupe years, and two of the 4 on the car were bad, 1 rear was leaking bad

completed one side of the ghetto fabulous spoiler, i built a new spoiler yesterday to start from as the first one pictured earlier was just a proof of concept that i knocked up in 10 minutes and ziptied on, this one i set back a good inch so it matches the same profile that the grill sets up above the bumper, it doesn't look like it has a fat chin now, it was too dark by time i got paint on it (only over to the fog light for the time being) to snap a good pic, the plastic welder from harbor freight works pretty good, it's a hot air blower instead of a soldering iron type

i was able to connect the e36 brake ducts to the e24 ducts so it's even functional, and theres a assload of room for a intercooler if i decide to boost this thing

nope i like the darker bottom but i will eventually paint the car a lighter color of silver, it's got a so so respray that's darker then the original color of which i can't remember at the moment, i am thinking about sterling silver which is one notch lighter then the factory color

it's got 205s and 215s front and back (all i had hanging around that had tread and didn't suck) but when i buy tires they will get at least 225s if not 245s http://members.cox.net/wdixon27/rockin.gif 225s would be fine

wired up the foglights and they are pretty decent with a good cut off

been steadily working on da shark but haven't been taking too many pics, got a couple today, i killed the nasty purple tint using my favorite technique, a spray bottle of soapy water a trash bag and the sun, it got the side windows perfectly but this **** was so old the rear window defroster cooked it and it was a pain to clear the back glass, never had that happen before but denatured alcohol and a razor blade got it

i got my cluster installed and just need to tweak a couple things and calibrate the speedo

got the speedo working and calibrated, i hit the interstate with my laptop and gps and held it at 60 for exactly 2 minutes (the speedo wants to be driven over a marked 2 mile distance for calibration) and that worked great, from 20 to 70 it's dead on and i suspect it's still on at higher speeds but traffic sucked even at 8pm and barely got to the speed limit, i now have working indicator lights for check engine, battery, high beams, turn sig's and low fuel, and according to my diagnostic scanner the temp and tach are correct, the only thing i don't like about the speedo is i couldn't get it to accept the dc square wave from the diff (even though it says it will work with a dc pulse), but my back up plan of using a abs sensor for a sine wave signal did work, now i need to figure out what signal the cruise wants, i grabbed the cruise system out of a e30 and bench tested it but couldn't get it to respond with either signal (e30 cruises are simple and only have 3 or 4 wires to be hooked up) i need to read the output from a functioning e30 speedo and see if the speedo head does anything to the signal or if it just passes though unmolested from the diff, if that's the case then i grabbed a dead component off the shelf/car and need to loose the dead part

got the e30 cruise system working i even got it wired up to the stock cruise switch ,i did a couple test drives before i completely buttoned it up (one after i got everything installed, and another when i wired up the old e24 cruise switch to make sure it worked) and it worked fine, on the way home though i got some surging that i need to look into, maybe ill try another servo if it screws up during tomorrows driving, ***update on the cruise, a e28 cruise brain solved the surge***
i chopped about 4 feet out of the e30 cruise harness and could probably of taken another foot

i built a bracket to mount the servo by the battery

i only suggest you lose these wheels and put some original on it.

i have 2 old badges and you gave me a great idea, as i will now try to scrape the paint off of them and polish them...if they turn out good, i might consider putting them on the car

i keep all of the rondells that have gone clean and polish them for my cars, they don't always come out good enough to polish as theres usually a bit that will not come off, and picking at it to get it off and usually gouges the surface up, i like the clear ones so i don't need to **** with it every couple years
as for the wheels i like the msw's i just put em on a couple days ago, the tires are still flat spotted from the 635 that i scored them from, the last inspection sticker was in 01 :D the next autocross is going to be fun (on the 20th) as these ****ers are rock hard and i am going to see how much of the coarse i can drift, they use to be real nice yoko's but father time took a bat to em, i may get a new set of sneakers before then though as i wanna see how the sway bars that should hit the shop this week will really do, i got a e23 27mm front and a 18mm e28 m5 rear, 3mm bigger on both ends
