rear passenger door wont lock

before i try to pull the door panel on the left rear door any advice would be helpful.the left rear passenger door wont lock,unlock or open from the inside.i tried moving the child safety lever on the door jam but it didnt help.the child safety latch was in the safe position when i first noticed the problem.i bought the car from a guy who has kids so im guessing he was utilizing the safe mode function.any experiences similar to this one?
