Oil Change for 2001 740il

I need to do my first oil change. I know the car takes 8 quarts of synthetic oil. I am not sure of the weight. Besides BMWs own synthetic what else is a good one to use? Mobil 1, Castrol, Valvoline or some other brand? Also, exactly where is the oil filter located and what else needs to be done besides resetting the service gage? I don't have a Bently manual for this car yet so any help would be appreciated.

we use M1 10/30 in and change it around 6k, pretty straight forward put 7 quarts in start it for a minute, kill it and after a minute check the level, drain it hot for the best dump, loosen the filter cap (36mm) so it will drain while the oil is draining

I haven't checked any books but is the oil filter cannister located on the driver's side firewall? It looks like it has a large hex head on top of the cap.
