:( Got the insurance renewal through, the quote wasn't what i'd hoped for to say the least!

Firstly I know, 23 yrs young + 3.5L = £££££. However i'm wondering if any of you out there are in a similar situation and/or can point me in the direction of a good company to try??! I've tried lots and lots of different ones on the internet but i'm getting a bunch of ridiculous (£2000+) quotes... But i know there's bound to be some out there specialising in our types of cars.

Changing the car is out of the question of course, I love it too much!

Oh and does anyone know what the alarm/immobiliser system in my car is called (i.e is it CAT1 etc?) - its the full closure alarm + immobiliser with OBC code.

Any suggestions GREATLY appreciated!

What?

How many years noclaims you got? Any claims against you?

I found that churchill gave me one of the best deals, if you quote up online you get 10% discount online.

With 3 years noclaims / age 23 I'm getting a quote of about £750 on a 540i from them, which seems steep, but then you consider it's a 4.0 v8 that's not really bad!

I quoted the 525TDs up for next year - at 4 years noclaims it'll clock in at £450 fully comp.

2 years NCD... but 3 points also on my license unfortunately. Got caught by the stealth tax... that doesn't help.

£750 on a 540i is good in my experience, my lowest is £1300 Fully comp on mine.

I've actually just requoted it:

Fully Comp: £665
3rd party: £765 (WTF!? lol)

Anyone backed by RBS - churchill/direct line/tesco class the E34 as an old mans car and make it quite cheap to insure!

3 points, was it in a 30 limit?

I've got an old SP50 - motorway speeding offence - on my license and it only made £40 a year difference to my policy!

Try a classic company like Footman James, at 17 yrs old it should qualify, mileage limit but its worth it. Even at double your age I still have problems, not that it makes you feel better(!),hence sale of 951 and 911,as for M5`s,own a garage!

Haha, due to work commitments etc, we agreed that we'd wait till the end of the month to do business - which reminds me I need to give him a shout again!

Haha you done your gorilla act with the 535i yet and pitched it in that skip?

Sp30 - exceeding speed limit on a 30mph road. Don't get me started on speeding fines, everywhere you turn these days its a fine... Don't return your tax refund on time its a fine, drive a few mph over the limit its a fine, don't pick your dog **** up its a fine, ride your bike on the pavement its a fine, don't have your seatbelt on its a fine... This place is getting ridiculous. Its not that i disagree with these things because i don't, i just hate the way they try to justify these fines in the interest of "safety" when all they are really doing is throwing another tax on the unsuspecting public.

Also Adrian Flux (I think) are another good one at insuring 535s! They should be able to get you under the 500 quid mark on it as classic status.

You what? hahaha, where do you keep getting all these little gems from?

I'd love to call dibs on some of the more flashy M5 bits, but I bet they're already making a B-line for your TDs :p

I'll do a quick edit of that photo at work tomorrow and scramble your reg plate before posting it :)

Yeah, insurance companies will give you **** for an SP30 as it's almost classed as dangerous driving in their books...

I got nailed for doing 97.9 in my old pug 205DTi and got asked if I wanted to take the dangerous driving slip (to be fair, I was driving like an absoloute tit at the time!) and be in court in a month. Or, I could sign on the 3 point fixed penalty notice there and then...

Quite often the copper really is just doing their job, most of them are okay - I really should have been nailed for DD that day. It's the cameras that piss me off, I think we should start a national movement for torching the ****ing things...

I hate the way they go for the easy target all the time! A friend of mine is a copper and he says (I've heard this from a few places actually) its all driven by stats. Collaring someone for a simple, no hassle, non arguable offense means that they will get a guaranteed conviction (or fine or whatever) which means 100% success rate and less paperwork cos its more open and shut. A more difficult case that takes a lot of resource and may or may not get a conviction is avoided due to the low success rate and the money involved. Terrible, and the police hate it as much as we do but their hands are tied. So the general law abiding public get it in the neck as we are easy targets while the dregs with no shame get away with it. Don't get me going..

Anyway on to insurance. When I was 25 my 535i sport was £500 but I had 6 years NCB. Just got a quote for my missus' CLK 200 and its £221 fully comp! I know its only a 2 litre but that is crazy cheap!

I have found that Elephant is usually really competitive, get a quote from them. I've used the search engines like confused and they are rubbish, quoted me £1600 (cheapest) last time, I eventually got it off elephant for £530.

You can also play them off each other, when they ask what your lowest quote is knock a few quid off, go back to your current insurer and tell them you've had a cheaper quote, they usually counter-offer. Try and put your missus or another female on there (make sure you put she regularly uses another car) and this should knock a bit off as well. And don't forget the obvious things like make sure you specify driveway or garage if you have one (even if you don't put it in there all the time). Each of these things might only make £20 difference individually but they should add up. Most important thing though don't lie or bend the truth to the point you can't 'blag' it should you need to make a claim. Insurers will give you cover easy but if there is anything in your application that you cannot prove (such as garage overnight, NCB etc) they will try to refuse to pay, even if its unrelated - car being in garage overnight for example has no bearing if you have an accident but the insurers can use that to try and null your policy - so only 'bend' the truth as much as you can get away with!

Yeah, if they look at my alloys + leather interior I'll be in trouble I suppose, I've not got the alpinas declared :/

Need to find a decent set of originals tbh, though I wonder how much different the policy would cost with them declared.

leicesterboy15
09-25-2007, 05:43 AM
When I asked about my alloys I was told that they would add to the policy for an admin fee (£16 I think) but the wheels would only be covered as though they were standard wheels. If you added them on at the start of the policy I imagine it would cost roughly the same but if you wanted them insured as Alpinas then I haven't got a clue. Even for standard BMW alloys though I imagine a set of new e34 wheels and tyres would cost about £600 so you could just ask for the money instead and buy another set of good used Alpinas. Its worth a call to the insurance co though, you can call them and say you are 'thinking' about it and they can give you a price, that way you are not committed.

Although its always good to have a spare set of standard alloys for emergencies!!

I usually find churchill is about 10% cheaper than tesco on the E34 - however where you live can massively affect your quote if it's fully comp.

Will give them a go provided a stupid dog in the back window isnt mandatory. You can live in a 'good' area and still have the same postcode as a duff one. Winston Churchill was our MP once. Not for long though. Speaks volumes doesnt it:)

Haha, while at uni I had to leave my insurance based back at my parents place cos I was living in manchester!

About the 4th time I'd had my car broken into in like 2 years ( I forget, it was that often! ) I was living in an M13 postcode which is shared by moss side/longsight iirc. I was deemed uninsurable on that postcode, and everytime I had a busted window I had to take the car to autoglass cos they wouldnt come out to that postcode!

Ha ha ha, similar here in Liverpool i suppose. Costs me an extra £150 since i moved to Croxteth with my girlfriend.

Tried Churchill they were better than most but didn't beat the renewal from Elephant. Still searching...

Its bad when your wishing you life away to get cheaper car insurance... ROLL ON 25!

Oh - off on a tangent again, but a NEW fine i heard about on the radio - £60 fine for parking in a mother and baby space in the supermarket! Do a test for yourself, turn the radio news on in your car tomorrow and see how many times the word FINE is used... Shocking. (winge winge winge)

I wouldnt say I know a huge amount about cars... just know some usually relevant stuff :)

Mechical/Electrical stuff has always fascinated me - I dont tend to look at things and take them at face value - I want to know how they work inside. I've always kept a keen eye on technology and just last year completed my MEng degree. Cars just kinda fit with the whole thing and the instant I could get my mitts on a car and a set of spanners I was off! I think the only major work I've ever paid a garage to do was a clutch change - but that was due to poor timing of the failure in the middle of my degree finals!

I wonder how the hell I landed in govt sized IT projects with an engineering degree!? Tbh if I was gonna do a job because I really wanted to do it - money be damned - I'd have become a car mechanic. Materialistic weasels for you...

... money be damned - I'd have become a car mechanic.

I think exactly the same! I'm a teacher and people think i'm crazy when i say i'd rather be getting stuck in under an old armour plated volvo estate. A friend and I are hoping to open up our own shop one day... COME ON LOTTORY WIN!

A pit and some quality tools would do us at the moment, working on the floor just isn't good for the old joints... they aren't what they used to be...

So if i encounter any electrical issues your my go-to-guy?!

man, I weep for you fellows.

I think the touring costs me about US$40 a month in insurance, and that's with a bunch of tickets from my sportscar days.

Yesterday I was tooling along on our city streets legally doing 100km/h, and I thought of how you guys can't even open the throttle without getting a ticket. Then I sped up to keep up with the flow of traffic :) .

Got my renewal through. Mr Tesco was kind enough to offer to reinsure me for £600 which promptly dropped to £511 when I told them I had a better quote! In fact I got it for £380 which includes above plus a car until repairs are done to mine ie no 7 day/14 day limit. Excess is £200. So you could say I saved £220. No I dont get commision for saying its a firm that sounds a lot like a place in Manchester called Swinton. Leaving Tesco to deliver the groceries
