I am currently getting a set of 17" BMW BBS (RC 090) Style 5 wheels which I hear came originally on the E39. (I bought 1 in really good shape for $150) I understand the offset on these are is IS 20 mm The offset on my 15" Bottle caps is ET 20 mm. I know the hub diameter on the 17" wheels is 74.1 mm and the hub diameter of my 1989 E34 525i (M20) is 72.56.

My question is: Is there anyone else out there that is running these rims with the same build car as mine. I know that hub centric rings are going to be required. Is Metal or Plastic better? I understand I should be using 235-45/17 tires, right? What problems or issues have you experienced

You've got it nailed.

I'd do the hubcentric rings from TireRack.

Ditto... while you're at it by an extra set for safety in case something happens to one of them if you decide to fix your brakes, shocks, etc... They cost about $4 a piece plus shipping. :)

I had them on mine, with the rings there were no problems at all.

Is there any difference between the Tire Rack hubcentric rings and these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=018&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=280158600225&rd=1

No offense to that seller, but if your wheels have "rattle problems", I'd worry about the wheel bolts before suspecting the hubcentric rings!

That is of no help at all.

eh?

You've had three helpful posts already, 75% is pretty good for an internet forum.

Here's some helpfulness: carbon at least won't suffer from galvanic corrosion like AL ones do.

LOL - I figured I'd leave those up for a while... you must have your "green button" hidden like I do. As with most of us these days, I do a lot of email and know all too well that it's too easy for things to be misinterpreted - I didn't know if the humor would find it's way through or not.

Ralph, if your lucky, you can also find E34-specific Style 5's for 72.56mm hubs. 1995 540's with the Sports package have them (like mine) from the factory. I've seen those once or twice on e-bay.

Cheers,
Duey

Your local Discount Tire can source them for you as well.

Wow, I didn't know they existed. I just picked up a set with the 74.1 mm hubs.

Well I installed the hubcentric rings today. I ran without them for a couple of days. I had the new wheels and tires speed balanced on a Hunter machine, but the shop was out of stock on the hubcentric rings. The installer even told me he didn't think I needed them. He was wrong. I could feel a very slight vibration at all speeds and it was much worse between 50-55 mph.

No problems now. The car is very smooth at all speeds. I'm looking forward to tonight when I can give it a more thorough test drive
