View Full Version : New motors is about 95% done, pics inside.

Today had its issues but went well overall. One major hang up I had was that the pin that the timing chain guide sits on was knicked up so I ordered a new one. Well, that was easy, but the hard part was getting the old pin out! My friend welded a bead around the end of the pin and we used a pair of vice grips welded to a slide hammer to get it out. Worked! After that it was smooth sailing, mostly.

The only stuff left to do is the timing chain tensioner, bolt the head down on the studs, and then put the cams in and valvecover on for good.
Weird issue though - look at the water pump - there is a circular portion sticking out that hits the crank wheel. WTF Is ithat? This pump is from AutohausAZ and is supposed to be right. I dunno wtf that is all about. Considered grinding it down but it looks like it might do something - not sure.

Yeah - this is the pump. wtf am I supposed to do - that bump hits my crank wheel. Unless I am forgetting something..

The outer housing in that photo is identical to a TDS, M51 I think, not a petrol as the TDS has a smaller front pulley.Sorry about crank seal but had brain fade, still worth trying the coke trick! Think the TDS uses the E28 525E block but not sure of that, pump is definately identical to my old one.
See, you're the reason some folks have the urge to pump 300bhp out of a stock 525i! :)

I dont know why your pump has the buldge like that, I just repaced mine this afternoon and I did not have it. I orderd a Hepu from BMA

This might sound absoloutely absurd, but the bolt pattern on that pump suggests it might fit the other way up as well?

powder coating is very strong - it shouldn't be damaged too easily

If you cant drop an engine into a 5 series cleanly without it banging up against things, you shouldnt own tools. The e34 engine bay is huge.

Old turbo parts might be up for grabs depending on what I end up replacing - obviously the turbo, for sure.
I was actually considering removing the subframe and degreasing it and replacing bushings and all, and then maybe raising the motor up into the car from below with the subframe. My car has a bad oil leak from what I think is the HG - I want to clean that all up and respray the engine bay.

Depends on how you intend to:
1) place the turbo
2) size the turbo
3) intercool the setup
"No" is a valid answer but there are many conditionals.

Why you need AC? With all that air going by your ears, it will be cool :) Ditched my AC since my car was NA.
Jon, would you please tell us how you got that engine so shiny? Would like to go black on mine but that looks tempting.

ha ha actually it was a Challenge Stradale and an E63 but they slowed and waited for me;)

Jon, Once this baby is in what are your plans for the old motor?
I'd love to see it torn down after 200k and (how many) miles under modified, boosted conditions.
Your bearings have done yeoman's work. I'm curious about how they look.

The plans are to do exactly that - strip down the old motor. I am trying to source an M52 crank and will be ordering JE or CP pistons (84mm for M52) and rods (135mm i think for M52) so basically I'd have a M52 crank assembly in an M50 non vanos block and head. This would result in 2.8L non vanos forged goodness. I will be inspecting the bearings/rings/pistons in that motor with much interest.

This interests me. Could you tell me more about how you get 2.8L out of the 2.5? What parts do you need (other than what you said)? also where can you get them
