that is not an s50/s52. they both have ITBs, and this doesn't. this looks to me like either a us spec weakish 240hp "m3 engine", or like a regular m52 with a sticker on it.
Yes it is an s52, just the US version. Still called an s52...

Thanks Paul! Silly question, but how are you liking it so far?

stupid classification, they aren't even similar....the us spec is more like a 328i engine that's been drilled, not anything like a euro m3....
oh anyway :)
How is the North American 3.2-liter M3 engine (S52) different from the 3.0-liter (S50 B30 USA)?
Unlke the Euro-spec S50 B32, the S52 powerplant is an evolution of the standard production M52 engine. However, it incorporates the following changes over its S50 B30 USA predecessor:
-Increased bore to 86.4mm (from 86.0mm) and increased stroke to 89.6mm (from 85.8mm) for a total displacement of 3,152cc (from 2,990cc)
-More finely balanced camshafts
-Valve lifters, springs and spring seats with reduced mass
-Revised intake and exhaust systems
-OBD II (On-Board Diagnostics, version II) compliance
-Horsepower unchanged at 240 hp (SAE) at 6,000 rpm
-Torque increased to 236 lb/ft at 3,800 rpm (up from 225 lb/ft at 4,250 rpm)

There isn't even a Euro S52 is there? I thought it was just simply named S50B30(286hp) and S50B32(321hp). From what I remember, the US 3.2 is the only one classified as a S52.

it has the m50 intake on it. Shrike071 loves his touring. Great writeup on the swap on bf.c

The car is dead reliable. With the 92 M50 intake (same part # as the 95 M3 piece), Turner performance chip, and a few other small changes it's probably running about 265hp-270hp. I only did the swap because I wanted a reliable daily driver. It's in a wagon, if I wanted performance I would have chose something smaller like an E30 to put the engine in. It hauls my dogs around and gets 30mpg @ 80mph on cruise. Most importantly, I don't see another one every 5 minutes.;)

Great thanks for the info...I'll definitely be doing one of these down the road

Could you describe the power difference with the 2.5L vs the 3.2L for everyone. The swap looks great!

Seat of the pants feeling is night and day. The car spools up pretty good until about 3500, then at 4k - it just leaps towards the 7k redline. (I've got a 3.64 LSD - so that helps a bit...). The sounds coming from the engine bay are music to my ears as well.
