I was getting out of the e34 yesterday and a guy I work with sees me get out.

"Wow - Nice." he says, "Is that new?"

"Not really," I reply, "it's about 17 years old..."

Guess I can keep her another decade still before she looks out of date. :)

It's amazing how well these E34's hold up when well taken care of.

One of my ex girlfriends passed me getting out of my car at the parking lot of school. She stopped and said "What the hell? Are you selling drugs or something??? How'd you get a BMW?"

Made my day because I left her ass around the same time i got the E34

It must feel kind of like when your >40 woman gets carded to buy alchohol and spends the rest of the day "skipping".
Have a look at the E34 and E32s contemporaries, few have aged as well.
A good friend of mine describes these cars as "having just enough metal stretched over their bones".

I teach 11-18yr olds and when I got the car the pupils quickly noticed it (as they do!)... I overheard a group of them talking about it once, thinking it was an 04 plate! The reg actually starts H404.... LOL!

i was hoping to have a story to post on this thread one day

i got my car out of the body shop last thursday (both fenders and front doors, basically). just in time to drive down into 2 feet of snow in TO- after a test-drive i quickly realized i would have to replace 2 tires (that's another story... what was i doing buying used snow tires in the middle of last summer?!? i'd rip me off, too! :( ) and paid premium for them and the last minute install.

i was in a pretty foul mood forking over all this dough and second-guessing myself for having it all done but i felt a little better after the guy behind the counter asked me "What year is that, a '98?"

"no it's an '89"

very long pause, staring at the car

"really?"

"uh-huh"

another pause, still staring at the car

"that's nice, man"

(sweet) :)

I get the same reactions, but they're usually followed by shreaks and crying when I turn the car on. I will find out why and report back.

...shreaks and crying when I turn the car on...

Caused by bleeding ears, and women having orgasms from the atmospheric resonance of the exhaust or sound system?? :D

I just had a car story too. I was loading my bass gears and amp into my e34 (with engine and head/fog light on, sunroof tilted) in front of a club after a trio gig (happy hours) right before they turned the place into a dance club (with DJ) at ~10pm. I overheard a college kid waiting in line to get in saying "I've never seen a musician loading gears into a BMW in my life". :)

He may think my car worth $40 grand or something. That makes my day!

Umm... Not quite. :p

Follow that up with, "That's right, and it can be yours for $30 grand cash..."

NO one ever says anything about mine... :(
except the week right after I got it some older gentlemen walked up and asked if it REALLY was a BMW or did I build something custom...

They had no idea BMW ever made a wagon.
