I wouldnt go as far as to say it doesn't work, but its a little tempramental.
It blows warm when the heater is on regardless of the setting. however as the heating starts to cut off (as the desired temperature is approached) it does work, ie will change from cold air to warm air.
Is there any easy way to make this permanently cold? My previous e 34 didn't have this wheel so blew cold all the time.
The car is uk spec 525, it has aircon if that makes a difference.

When you turn the temp selector wheel to full cold or full hot, does it stay there? Mine bounces back a little and doesn't stay put very well.
Is this normal?
If it has the illuminated dial, then that's normal behavior. The dial marks are lit with a fiber optic rod which is stiff in cold weather and will have some springback when moved from one extreme to the other. If you set it for warm, it should stay there if you try again later in the day. The plastic tube needs time to relax. Scroll down to pic near the bottom of the page:

That makes sense. Now that you mention it, in the summer I don't believe it bounces back.
Time to change the bulb. I didn't even know it was lighted.
Thx!

NICE!!! more things to fix... I've been needing to change that bulb for a year but could never find directions or a part number.

Mine's broken now. Cold all the time. I had to turn it off. Will fix in the spring.

Looks like the bulb is NLA, but the replacement p/n is 63217167000.
