Hey guys - at work and forgot to check bentley manual last night. What does it say in terms of fuel tank removal?
In the trunk remove the access cover and hose and wires from sender.
Remove right wheelwell and disconnect hoses to the expansion tank and exp tank mounting bolts(?). Remove filler neck gasket at filler. drop the tank.

Awesome thanks Ross. Sounds straight forward. Now where to get it cleaned out at..
I think Eastwood sells stuff for DIY.

well they sell tank refinishing stuff for rust proofing. I am actually looking to just wash the gas out so I can weld into the tank.
Fuel pick-up,eh?
That will diminish your sleeper status significantly.

Wash it out with soap and water.. several times
Then put an exhaust vent hose into it - and let the car run for a half an hour to dry the inside out.

Yeah I dunno about the exhaust hose, but I'll dry it out.
The sump is used for an external fuel pump - it creates a low spot in the fuel tank so that fuel naturally goes there when accelerating. If I don't sump my tank, and I just drill/weld bulk heads to the tank, theres nothing really keeping any amount of fuel to the sump. So under braking you might starve the pump. The sump is a wedge, but on the stock tank you drill 5 2" holes, so that even when you brake there is somewhat of a "container" to hold some fuel.
Here's a picture:

See the ports at the rear? I am not sure if he has an internal pump since his line goes "up". But yeah thats the idea.
