Exhaust leak at manifold to down pipe

Is there some kind of trick to getting the down pipes to seal at the exhaust manifold? Take them off, put them on, take them off, put them on, wiggle them, wiggle them....nothing is working.

It's better, but, still leaks. it is not the exhaust manifold gaskets, put new ones on, manifolds are not cracked......

Any BMW secrets to share?

on the e32/34 m30 there is no head pipe gasket, at least none that i've ever seen on the several dozen cars i've worked on/scrapped, the only problem i've ever seen has been the studs twisting off, generally if the cup shaped end of the head pipe is not out of round and the springs are inplace under the nuts it's sealed. it's basicly a ball and socket joint, i tighten the nuts down till the coils of the springs start to bind

Yep, metal to metal, no gasket. might be my down pipe is dinged and not sealing right. I guess I will take the thing off and check it.
