I took apart my alternator today. The brushes are probably at their 5mm mark about now. They created a pretty big groove in the alternator.
The alternator is a Valeo made one, the new voltage regulator that I received will not fit into the Valeo unit. I can't find a Valeo replacement regulator.

BMA nor Autohausaz has them. I checked the brushes are different size from the Bosch ones.

Is it a problem that there are groves on the contact?

I never heard the alternator when engine is running. How to make an audio clip of that alternator running with engine running?
For brushes, there are specialized companies which sell brushes only, any type, size you want.

Not really as long as those groves are not source of contact between the rotor segments (look at that visualy and if you can check with an ohm-meter if there is continuity or not between adjacent segments).

Bear in mind that carbon stuck in the groves may also conduct across the segments. I'd clean the groves out with a small screwdriver -careful not to scratch the com and dont go mad. And get any black (carbon) off segment faces with very fine glass paper, cleaning in the direction of rotation. Wipe down with meths. If it works great. If not, no harm done
