a block, you bolt a torque plate down to the block and torque it to specs, This simulates the same load on the block that it has when the head is bolted on. Where the bolt holes are for the head bolts the block will distort slightly when tight. By using the torque plate before you hone , the cylinder wall ends up being perfectly round after honing so the pistons and rings fit better.

Exactly - I wouldn't really go out of my way to machine a torque plate and stuff if you're only using stock bolts or stock sized studs. But I am using the 1/2" custom ARP studs that I am torquing to 85 - 90 ft lbs which is a LOT more torque than 60 - 65 ft lbs that the stock stud size is torqued to. So, the block will move around under that load - this simulates that and I bored the engine out with that load. Unloaded the motor might not be straight, but that doesn't matter since the head will be on :)

Here are updates!

I went out and bought (4) 500w halogen lamps. They worked awesome for heating the engine bay. I just finished masked off the exterior and some interior of the bay. Then I wiped it down with this prep-all stuff Jay said to use - worked out nice it took up all the sanding/lacquer residue. Then we used Eastwood Black Chassis satin black paint. The engine bay was then covered again for a while and it dries

That's going to make a big difference once the car is together! Fresh clean black paint will make the motor and stuff stand out so much more!



Then we realized its Saturday and Jim should have finished assembling the motor so we went over to look and... HE DID!

thats gonna look sweet when its done, all ways nice to see a mk1 golf being sorted in the background too, the best one of any golf i think, the only fwd i've ever driven and liked it. How thick is that torque plate?

Gorgeous job so far,the writing on that torque plate is OTT! All that torque/power going through two standard engine mounts????????? How about fabricating a bracket off the head to conneect to a strut brace?

Barney I think I'll be making solid aluminum mounts for the engine. Thats going to be later on the list once the car is running.
