Is the tie rod end next to the wheel, left or right hand threaded? I busted the balljoint seal a while ago trying to pop it off with a pickle fork :(

Right hand threaded OR you turn left(counter-clockwise) to losen and turn right(clockwise) to tighten.

It depends on which side of the car... driver's or passenger
each side is the same one left and one right.
I thin heesa tawkin bout the mounting stud. In which case it's lefty loosey, righty tighty.

Bob, it's on the left hand side, next to the wheel. So would it be left handed or a right handed thread? I'm talking about the whole balljoint assembly, there are two on the tie rod. Part number 4 (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HE63&mospid=47410&btnr=32_0334&hg=32&fg=25&hl=7)

You have to look at the threads on each end, since the sets can be put on either way for each side of thr car.

Chris one way of knowing is by looking carefully at the threadded portion of the tie rod. If the threads are at a slight angle its a left hand thread, if they are fairly straight across, it right hand.
