Hi, I'm new on here. In a bit of a panic here, are the E34 530i (early model, 1988 & 1989) fitted with the same diffs from the 7 Series from the same era?

It's my understanding you can bolt on in place of the other but there are variations on the pinion flanges and perhaps also the outputs.
So the answer is maybe.
The information you need is on this site, I've seen some charts covering interchange.

I've done a thread search but cant seem to find anything. I have a guy in urgent need of a diff housing for a 730i BMW, and I have 2x 530i's. If it turns out the housings are the same then we're both sorted.

730 and 530 of the same year should share diffs,

different models use different output flange sizes and half shaft in/output sizes, splines can be different sizes too as well as ratios being different!

if its just the housings you should have no problems! your 530 will use the smaller input flange, smaller outputs and have smaller splines into the hub.. should be a straight swap for same year 730
