I just bought my '89 525i. I was driving to work in the snow today, and all of the car shut off, no power, nothing. Is this common? Had no warning indicators at all. I just had it towed. Any ideas? I'm suspecting an alternator..
Sudden death is often attributable to the fusible links near the battery.

I would agree on the fusible link, the same thing happend to me, and a paper clip saved my life with some duct tape.

Usally the fusible link failure with let the car run, but the accessories die.
But the third (unfused) terminal in that block goes to the DME and if it is loose it will kill the car.
Does the starter crank? if so then maybe the main relay has died.

Everything died on my '89 525i, maybe they did it wrong that year.
I could coast and park on the side, all was dead, I checked tghe battery and the fusible link was just next to it, it was shot...
Super easy to check.

Could the third terminal for the DME was wired to the fused side.
I had the loose terminal and the car would magically die and run again.
