1995 540/6 dies while driving

my wife was driving on the freeway, all of the sudden the engine shut off and will not restart, will not turn over, any ideas? thanks

So the engine doesn't turn over at all? There is no power in the battery? Lights and accessories do not work?

Sounds like the alternator has quit.

Call the tow truck or get out there with a freshly charged battery. The freshly charged battery will probably supply enough power to get the car home, unless it's raining and you need to run lights and wipers. Try not to run any accessories if you make this choice. Hope you're not too far from home.

my wife just had the car towed home and i got home from work, car does turn over but its making a clicking noise as it turns over, does this car do a stomp test?, i tried it and nothing happens, im no where near a bmw mechanic, so any help would be apreciated

well, since it didnt sound like it was getting fuel, ckd the fuse box, sure enough, the fuel pump fuse was blown, replaced it and started right up, so always check the fuses first!

The fuel pump may be on it's way out if it drew enough amperage to blow the fuse.
It is also a good idea to fill the gas tank when it's half empty rather than running the tank to empty, as the fuel cools and lubricates the in tank fuel pump.
