I never peeled away the rubber to look inside. I think it is only a spring to keep the the belt tension. I do know the tensioner on my SAAB's is more elaborate. It has a spring and is also a dampener using hydraulic fluid.

hello, i have a bmw 520i L REG and i would like to know how the tensioner works on my fan belt is it automatic or mechanical?

If it looks like a mini shocker its automatic (see part 8 here)

Thats for a 525i but I guess as yours will be an M50 too it will probably be the same?
