This is what I found behind the dash when I restored the original radio harness, thereīs still the odd ericsson box (some phone thing, I think) and a few wires (now isolated) left in there as I didnīt want to dismantle the whole car and I couldnīt find where the attached wires went..

P.O did a terrible amateur job jeeeeeeez!

Just wanted to show you guys how things were mangled up :)

Restored to original and EVERYTHING works now!

That's what we call spaghetti wires in the industry. I've seen it too many times.

we called them 'slash n burn installs'

How about a "slash n burn spaghetti with tomatoes, olives and ducttape dressing for looks, installed while drunk and worked fine in my 89 Audi"?

What, no wire nuts?

Are they like muffler bearings?

What do the Brits call them? Or do you use the little jobs with a screw clamp on either end like I've seen in Europe.

Never heard of them either so I looked them up:

Like these?

Only ever seen 'wire nuts' once and that was in some chinese surprise electrical gadget that was more a fire risk than anything else...

Now, I'm trying to install a new Blaupunkt headunit, but I have no idea on how to install it. Is there an easy to install harness for the e34?

There's a range of harness adaptors made for these, mine had the original harness connector still attached... bought an adaptor from halfords for a tenner and didnt have to do *any* splicing at all.

Means I've now got two adaptors under there, but hey :) it all fits and I didnt have to massacre my wiring - you can see it in here:

EDIT: Disclaimer: The above applies unless you've got one of the *really* early hard wired units :)

i inherited this... and none of it worked either. (does now)

can't believe someone would have put a silver faced stereo in that panel.

No such thing....

I re-wired everything since I put new speakers, headunit, thicker wires, amp, sub, capacitor.

Yes, what are they called?
I did some electrical repairs for family in Austria but can't even remember what they are called in German.

I'm sure there's an oldschool name for these, cant remember it off the top of my head though - they're generally referred to as terminal blocks/terminal strips/chocolate blocks...

I bet Whiskychaser or Barney will know another name for them!

Well, I brutally cut all the wires in the pic! Found the original harness or what was left of it and spliced a new header on from a original harness that I stripped from a beemer in a scrapyard.. I used about 2ft of the entire wire to restore my harness, easier than u might think actually as the colorcodings were a perfect match!

If its for your ī89 I think that you might need 1 of these:
